Joining me this week in the Celebrating Local hot seat is Shazia Mustafa, Founder of Third Door.
Tell us about Third Door?
Third Door helps your work and family to grow together. How do we do this? By offering parents a coworking space to work from whilst we look after their little ones in our Ofsted registered nursey.
I am so proud of what we have created at Third Door these past eight years. It is a place for both mothers and fathers as we truly believe in equal parenting and have created our spaces accordingly. Additionally, another area of our uniqueness is the flexibility we offer in our Nursery hours making Third Door very attractive for freelancing parents, self-employed, remote-workers and employed parents who work irregular patterns. Parents can sign up for a monthly package from as little as 30 hours a month to full-time place. With our flexible packages, you can book your child in around your working needs and those on fixed days can swap days, buy additional days or downgrade when on holiday!
With Third Door, we have created a solution to the way parents are working in 2018!
What is your role in the business?
I am the co-founder and manager of Third Door. It is my job at the moment to ensure we have tight procedures and processes in place so I can leave the running of Third Door to my wonderful team so I can grow the business into multiple sites, which is what my focus for 2018 is.
How do you juggle motherhood with running your own business?
By having a supportive husband who does as much with our three children at home and around the house as I do and a business that does not need me on a daily basis.
What made you decide to take the leap and start your own business?
I had the idea for Third Door back in early 2010 when my eldest was only 5 months old. I loved the idea and could visualise a world where more parents would be working on their careers whilst still spending quality time with their children. This is why the flexibility side and equal parenting has been so important to me and sets Third Door apart.
What has been your biggest accomplishment still launching Third Door?
I now have a business that supports itself without needing any external funding, and one which has been emulated around the country and world. I have seen how we have benefitted countless families and mostly, I have loved nurturing the people who have worked at Third Door, especially in the Nursery.
What other local business/company are you loving at the moment?
I am a huge fan of Onsite Massage who is also a member of Third Door! I love the fact that you can book a therapist to your workplace – we have booked many massage therapists through Onsite Massage in our Workhub as well as several parties we have had.
Favourite thing about South West London?
I love SW London. I have lived here now for 14 years and really don’t want to live anywhere else (I am originally from Gateshead and sometimes the internal voice to move does come but I live and breathe London!). We have so much choice for things to do with children, shopping, green spaces, great schools and the fact it is is so easy to jump on a train to Central London to meet friends from others parts of London.
If you could be anyone for the day, who would it be and why?
I can’t think of anyone I would like to be but I was very impressed with Natalie Portman’s recent speech about her experience growing up in Hollywood and would love to have a conversation with her about it with my eldest who has shown much interest in pursuing a career in music and acting!
What advice would you give to anyone looking to start their own business?
Do your research to see if there is a need and if you find there is a need, start with a minimal viable product! If you are passionate about your idea and find a market for it, you will find you are stronger and capable of greatness more than we think!
